Hello! As this is my first blog I thought I would start with sharing a bit about myself.
My name is Alexandra, I am married to Stuart and have three children, pictured as Easter bunnies above. Isla is 3 and is the baby of the family – though don’t let her hear you call her a baby! Her fierce attitude is unleashed if she hears that phrase! Amy is 7 and has a passion for nail polish, youtube and not clearing up her bedroom and last but by no means least is Harry who turns 10 next week. Harry has autism with a moderate to severe learning disability and is my inspiration for Perfectly Unique Photography. About 5 years ago we went to a family photoshoot and the experience was very stressful, I spent the whole time trying to make Harry do ‘normal’ things and apologising when (understandably) he did the opposite of what was being asked. I made a promise then we wouldn’t do anymore family photoshoots and, because I studied photography at college and university, take photos of the family myself.
Fast forward 5 years I decided to leave a 14 year career in the civil service and work as project manager for a local company. The universe had different plans for me and unfortunately I fell (rather unexpectedly!) very ill and was in hospital for two months. During my stay I had a lot of time to think about my future and what I actually wanted to do with my life. My family knew my passion for photography and so suggested I moved into that field and I mentioned that I would like to offer a different experience to families with special needs children – and thats where the idea stopped. I came out of hospital and continued my recovery and once I was fully fit started applying for local project management roles. However my special needs photography idea kept growing and playing on my mind. After a year of spending time with the kids and applying for ad hoc local roles I had a eureka moment – what was I waiting for? Why wasn’t I giving it a go? What was the worst that could happen? I didn’t have a sensible answer to any of those questions so I decided to do it and here we are!
I have a very clear purpose for Perfectly Unique Photography – to take the stress out of a photoshoot for families with special needs. I do this by gaining an understanding of the different needs each family has, going to the venues that the family feels most comfortable in and doing the photoshoot with just a camera, natural lighting and at a pace that suits everyone.
Thank you for reading this blog and I hope it gives you an understanding of what I offer – if you have any questions, comments or feedback please do get in touch!
